SelfieToPassport turns a phone selfie into a passport or visa photo sized to the issuing agency's published rules, for U.S. documents and those of other countries, and lists each rule with its official source and the date we checked it. Not affiliated with any government agency.
What it is
SelfieToPassport is a website that turns a photo taken with a phone into a passport or visa photo of the right size. The measuring, cropping and file making all run in your browser, so the photo stays on your device.
Next to the tool, every document has a page with its official photo rules, the page each rule comes from and the date we checked it. Those pages are free to read and do not require buying anything.
What it is not
SelfieToPassport is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of State or any government agency.
- It does not issue passports or visas, and it does not submit applications.
- It cannot promise that a photo will be accepted: a person at the passport agency, the immigration service or the consulate reviews every photo.
- It does not replace the background of any photo: the State Department lists software-cut backgrounds as unacceptable, and other agencies count a pasted background as an altered photo.
The official rules are free at travel.state.gov.
How we check the rules
Rules come only from the website of the agency that issues the document, such as the U.S. Department of State, or from another .gov page. Never from blogs, forums or other photo services.
For every rule we keep the official page, the day we read it and the exact sentence on that page that supports it. On the site you see the rule in plain words, with the link and the date. When an official page contradicts itself, we publish the version that matches the rest of the agency’s pages and keep a note to recheck it.
Rules expire. Each topic has a review deadline; a rule that passes its deadline without a new check is taken off the page at the next daily update, and a page left with too few current rules drops out of search results until it is rechecked.

Prices of other photo services, shown for comparison, come from each company’s own website and are dropped after 30 days unless they are read again.

How we make money
The rule pages and the photo preview are free. The full-size photo and the print sheets are a one-time payment of $6.95, processed by Stripe. There are no ads and no affiliate links.
