SelfieToPassport: $6.95 from a phone photo

SelfieToPassport turns a phone photo into a passport or visa photo in your browser for $6.95 per person and document. You get the digital file for an online renewal or a visa upload, a 4x6 print sheet with two 2 x 2 inch photos and a letter-size sheet. Each extra person or document in the same order is $2.95.

The preview with the measurements is free, so you see the result before paying. You print the sheet at a photo counter or on photo paper at home, which costs extra and is not part of the price above.

The rule

  • The U.S. Department of State requires a printed passport photo of 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). travel.state.gov

What each store charges

The Post Office, FedEx Office and Walgreens publish one national price. The UPS Store does not: each store is a franchise and sets its own price, so the two stores below are examples, not a national rate.

Each price below comes from the store’s own page, read on the date shown. Store prices change without notice, so this page drops a price 30 days after it was last checked.

The rules

  • The U.S. Postal Service charges $15.00 for a passport photo taken at a Post Office. usps.com
  • FedEx Office charges $15.95 for two 2 x 2 inch passport photos, printed or digital, taken in store with no appointment. office.fedex.com
  • Walgreens charges $16.99 for two printed passport photos, with a digital copy sent by email at no extra charge. photo.walgreens.com
  • The UPS Store at 501 S College St in Charlotte, NC charges $19.99 plus tax for a printed set of two U.S. passport photos. locations.theupsstore.com

The lowest-cost way: a photo at home and a 4x6 print

The State Department accepts a photo taken by a friend or family member, so taking it costs nothing. What takes work is sizing it to 2 x 2 inches with the head at the right height, then printing it on photo paper.

Walgreens lists regular prints, 4x6 included, from $0.29. You can crop the photo yourself for free, or let SelfieToPassport size it for $6.95 and hand you the 4x6 sheet with two photos, ready for any photo counter.

The rules

  • The State Department lists three places to get a passport photo: an acceptance facility, any company that offers photo services, or a friend or family member. travel.state.gov
  • Walgreens lists prints and enlargements from 4x4 to 8x10, 4x6 included, from $0.29. photo.walgreens.com

CVS and Costco

CVS has a passport photo page at cvs.com/photo/passport-photos, but the site blocks automated reading, so SelfieToPassport has not checked the CVS price and does not quote one. Check that page or your store before you go.

Costco’s photo page at costco.com/photo.html now offers Shutterfly prints and gifts and does not list passport photos. Ask your warehouse before counting on it.

Visa photos: India, China and Canada

Stores charge about the same for a visa photo as for a passport photo, or more for a non-U.S. size. SelfieToPassport charges the same $6.95 for a visa photo as for a passport photo.

The size depends on the country. India’s e-Visa takes a JPEG upload, so prints are no use there. China asks for a 33 x 48 mm paper photo and Canada for a frame of at least 35 x 45 mm, neither of which is the U.S. 2 x 2 inch square.

The rules

  • FedEx Office sells visa photos, printed or digital, starting at $15.95. office.fedex.com
  • The UPS Store at 501 S College St in Charlotte, NC charges $32.99 plus tax for printed international-size photos, including Canadian and Chinese sizes. locations.theupsstore.com
  • The India e-Visa portal takes the applicant’s photo as a JPEG file of at least 10 KB and no more than 1 MB. indianvisaonline.gov.in
  • The Chinese Embassy in the United States sets the paper photo for a China visa application at 33 mm wide by 48 mm tall. us.china-embassy.gov.cn
  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sets the minimum frame for a Canadian visitor visa photo at 35 x 45 mm (1 3/8 x 1 3/4 inches). canada.ca
