How do I take a U.S. passport photo at home?
Take a U.S. passport photo at home with a phone: 2 x 2 inch size, head 1 to 1 3/8 inches, light, background, pose and what not to edit. Sources dated.
Have a friend take it, or prop your phone several feet away and use the timer. An arm’s-length selfie is too close for a U.S. passport photo.
SelfieToPassport turns a phone photo into a U.S. passport or visa photo sized to the State Department’s rules: a 2 x 2 inch square with the head 1 to 1 3/8 in tall. It all happens in your browser, so the photo never leaves your phone.
SelfieToPassport is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of State or any government agency. The official photo rules are free at travel.state.gov.
Free preview. $6.95 for the digital photo and both print sheets.

Rules from travel.state.gov
The rules, side by side
Every rule below comes from travel.state.gov, with the date we last read it. The right column is what happens to your photo here.
How it works
Stand a few feet in front of a plain white or off-white wall, facing a window. Ask a friend to take it, or prop the phone at eye level and use the timer.
The tool finds your chin, your eyes and the top of your head, sizes the head to 1.2 inches and checks the wall and the light. The photo is not uploaded.
You get the digital file and a 4x6 sheet with two photos. Any photo counter prints a 4x6; at home, print at 100% on photo paper.
What you get
Documents
Each page has the official measurements, the source and the date we checked it, and, where we can make the photo, the tool set to that document.
Visa photos for other countries too, such as the India e-Visa photo.
Compare all photo requirements by countryRenewing by mail
A renewal by mail is Form DS-82, your most recent passport, one 2 x 2 inch photo and a check, in one envelope. Our pages explain who qualifies, the fees and where to mail it, with the State Department source for each rule.
The form is free from the State Department. If you want help, our renewal kit checks that DS-82 is the right form for you, fills it in from your answers in your browser, and gives you the fee, the address and a checklist: $4.95, or $3.95 added to your passport photo.

Not for U.S. passports and visas. The State Department lists photos with a background cut out by a retouching tool as unacceptable, so the tool only crops and resizes the photo you took. If your wall is not plain white or off-white, it asks for a new photo and tells you how to fix the light or the wall. Source: travel.state.gov "Passport Photos", checked on Oct 25, 2026.
Only from several feet away, not at arm’s length. The State Department asks you to “position yourself several feet away from the camera with your head centered and head fully visible,” which is farther than your arm reaches. Its page lists “a friend or family member” as one of the options for getting the photo taken, so ask someone to take it, or prop your phone several feet away and use the timer. A correctly sized digital photo, a 4x6 print sheet with two photos and a letter-size sheet with six, for one person and one document. Up to 3 photos for the same document within 30 days of purchase. Each extra person or document in the same order is $2.95. The preview is free.
No, and nobody honestly can: a State Department employee or a consular officer reviews every photo. What we can do is size it to the published rules and flag problems before you pay. If a photo is turned down, make a new one from your order link (up to 3 photos for the same document within 30 days of purchase). Refunds are separate: any order can be refunded in full within 7 days of purchase, no questions asked.
At any photo counter that prints 4x6 snapshots, or at home on photo paper with the printer set to 100% (actual size). The State Department requires matte or glossy photo-quality paper and refuses photocopies. Source: travel.state.gov "Passport Photos", checked on Oct 25, 2026.
