Passport and visa photo requirements

As of November 3, 2026, SelfieToPassport lists the photo rules for 47 documents from 23 countries and areas, each checked against the issuing agency’s own pages. The printed sizes in the table are 2 x 2 in, 50 x 70 mm, 35 x 45 mm, 33 x 48 mm, 50 x 50 mm and 40 x 60 mm.

Every cell below comes from the official page linked in its row, with the date we read it. If a number is not written on the official page, the cell stays empty.

A dash means the official page does not give that number for the document. Head height is measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, or to the top of the hair where the document’s rule says so; each document page says which. “Rules only” marks documents whose photo the agency or consulate takes or wants from a professional, so the tool does not make it.

Not interchangeable

Where passport and visa photos differ

  • In a U.S. passport photo, the head must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. travel.state.gov
  • The State Department’s photo composition template for U.S. visas calls for a 2 x 2 inch photo, with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) tall measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin. travel.state.gov
  • A baby’s eyes do not have to be fully open in a U.S. passport photo, but older children must have their eyes open. travel.state.gov
  • In a baby’s or toddler’s visa photo, no other person may appear and the child should be looking at the camera with eyes open. travel.state.gov
  • To renew a U.S. passport online, the photo must be a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file between 54 KB and 10 MB. travel.state.gov
  • The digital visa image has to be a JPEG file of 240 KB or less. travel.state.gov

Method

How this table is built

Each document has a file of rules. Every rule in it records the official page it came from, the day we read that page and the exact sentence that supports it. The sentence stays in our files; the page shows the rule in plain words with the link and the date.

Rules expire. Each topic has a review deadline, and a rule that passes it without a new check comes off the site at the next daily update:

  • Size and head position: every 180 days
  • Background: every 180 days
  • Glasses, head coverings and clothing: every 180 days
  • Digital file: every 120 days
  • How recent: every 365 days

More countries are added only after their rules are checked against the issuing government’s own website. How we check.

FAQ

Is a U.S. passport photo the same as a U.S. visa photo?

Both are 2 x 2 inches with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall, but the visa rule measures the head to the top of the hair, the digital visa file must be a 600 to 1200 pixel JPEG of 240 KB or less, and a baby must have open eyes for a visa photo but not for a passport photo. Why is a cell empty?

Because the official page does not state that number for the document. We leave the cell empty instead of estimating.
