Canadian passport photo: size and rules

As of October 25, 2026, Canada’s passport photo is 50 mm wide by 70 mm high, with the face 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown, taken by a commercial photographer within 6 months (per canada.ca, checked on Oct 25, 2026).

IRCC requires Canadian passport photos to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio.

IRCC rejects a passport application if its photos were altered in any way, and it names photo-editing software, filters and AI tools specifically.

Questions people ask

What size is a Canadian passport photo?

A rectangle, not a square: 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (2 x 2 3/4 inches). The face, measured from chin to crown, takes up 31 to 36 mm of that height.

Children and babies use the same size. The face and shoulders must be centered and square to the camera, and you need 2 identical prints for each application.

Can you take a Canadian passport photo at home?

No. IRCC says the photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio and professionally printed on plain, high-quality photo paper. Home prints are refused.

The studio writes or stamps the date and its name and full address on the back of one print. For a new passport, your guarantor also certifies that photo as a true likeness and signs it; adults renewing do not need a guarantor.

Can a Canadian passport photo be edited?

Not at all. IRCC treats any change as an alteration and rejects the application: adjusting color, brightness, contrast or sharpness, cutting the person out onto a white background, recoloring clothes, removing shadows from the background, or retouching red eye, glare, scars or birthmarks. Software, filters and AI tools are all covered.

What digital photo do you need to renew a Canadian passport online?

A JPEG in portrait orientation with a 3:2 aspect ratio, from 1,200 x 1,800 pixels up to 3,000 x 4,500 pixels (width by height), between 200 KB and 5 MB, with the head filling 45% to 50% of the height.

It still comes from a commercial photographer, saved straight from the camera’s original file, and you type in the studio’s name, address and the photo date when you upload it. Online renewal is open only with a home and mailing address in Canada and a passport expiring within 6 months or already expired.

How is a Canadian passport photo taken for a baby?

A newborn can sit in a car seat with a white blanket over the seat behind the head, as long as no shadows fall around the ears, on the face or on the background. No hands, the parent’s or the baby’s, may show.

IRCC allows some range in an infant’s expression. A child passport cannot be renewed, so each new one needs new photos.

Common reasons a photo is turned down

  1. Light-colored clothing can blend into the background and get the photo rejected, IRCC warns. canada.ca
  2. Photos showing red eye are refused, and so are photos where red eye was edited out. canada.ca
  3. Each photo has to be clear, sharp and in focus. canada.ca

Every rule, with its source

Size and head position

  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires Canadian passport photos to be 50 mm wide by 70 mm high, which it gives as 2 by 2 3/4 inches. canada.ca
  • In a Canadian passport photo, the face measures 31 to 36 mm (1 1/4 to 1 7/16 inches) from the chin to the crown, the top of the head. canada.ca
  • The face and shoulders have to be centered and square to the camera, with the head not tilted in any direction. canada.ca

Background

  • IRCC asks for a plain white or light-colored background behind the applicant. canada.ca
  • The face has to stand out clearly from the background, and the lighting must be even, with no shadows, glare or flash reflections. canada.ca
  • Shadows around the ears, on the backdrop or across the face and shoulders make a Canadian passport photo unacceptable. canada.ca

Glasses, head coverings and clothing

  • A neutral expression is required: eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at the lens, mouth closed, neither smiling nor frowning. canada.ca
  • IRCC ties the no-smile rule to a recommendation from the International Civil Aviation Organization, saying a neutral face lets facial recognition systems help prevent fraud. canada.ca
  • Clear eyeglasses can stay on in a Canadian passport photo as long as the eyes are plainly visible and the lenses show no glare. canada.ca
  • Sunglasses and tinted lenses are refused, prescription ones included, even when the eyes can be seen through them. canada.ca
  • A hat or head covering is accepted only if it is worn daily for religious beliefs or medical reasons, the full face is visible and it casts no shadow on the face. canada.ca
  • Hair may be worn up or down, provided it is pulled off the face so the edges of the face show. canada.ca

How recent

  • Canadian passport photos must show the applicant’s current look, taken no more than 6 months before the application is submitted. canada.ca

Editing and filters

  • IRCC rejects a passport application if its photos were altered in any way, and it names photo-editing software, filters and AI tools specifically. canada.ca
  • Even technical touch-ups count as altering a Canadian passport photo, including changes to color, brightness, contrast or sharpness. canada.ca
  • Cutting the person out around the head and shoulders and pasting them onto a white background is listed by IRCC as an alteration. canada.ca
  • Recoloring clothing or changing the background in any way, even just removing shadows, also makes the photo an altered one. canada.ca
  • Retouching to look better is out as well: no removing glare, red eye, scars or birthmarks, and no changing hair color. canada.ca

Digital file

  • A digital photo is needed only to renew a Canadian passport online; applications made in person or by mail use the printed-photo rules. canada.ca
  • The digital passport photo must be a .jpeg or .jpg file in a 3:2 aspect ratio, shot with the camera held in portrait orientation. canada.ca
  • The image must be at least 1,800 pixels high by 1,200 pixels wide and no larger than 4,500 pixels high by 3,000 pixels wide. canada.ca
  • The file has to weigh between 200 KB and 5 MB, and the chin-to-crown height of the head must be 45% to 50% of the photo’s height. canada.ca
  • The digital file must be saved directly from the camera’s original capture; the photographer can then hand it over through a file-sharing service, a USB flash drive or email. canada.ca
  • When uploading the photo, an online applicant enters the studio or photographer’s name and address and the date the photo was taken. canada.ca
  • IRCC suggests asking the photographer for both a digital copy and a print, so the applicant can fall back on an in-person or mail application if online renewal does not work out. canada.ca
  • A scan of a printed photo is not accepted as the digital file. canada.ca

Printed photo

  • Every Canadian passport application must include 2 identical, unaltered photos. canada.ca
  • The prints must be made professionally on plain, high-quality photographic paper; IRCC refuses photos printed at home or on heavyweight paper. canada.ca
  • Canadian passport photos can be either in color or in black and white. canada.ca
  • On the back of one of the two prints, the photographer writes or stamps the date the photo was taken and the studio’s name and complete address. canada.ca

Babies and children

  • A child’s Canadian passport photo follows the adult size, 50 mm wide by 70 mm high. canada.ca
  • Neither the parent’s hands nor the child’s own hands may appear in the photo. canada.ca
  • A newborn may be photographed sitting in a car seat if a white blanket covers the seat behind the head. canada.ca
  • Because a newborn rarely holds a neutral face, IRCC allows some range in infant facial expressions. canada.ca

Where photos come from

  • IRCC requires Canadian passport photos to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio. canada.ca
  • For a new passport, a guarantor writes “I certify this to be a true likeness of” and the applicant’s name on the back of one photo and signs it; adults renewing skip the guarantor. canada.ca
  • Renewing a Canadian passport online is possible only with a home and mailing address in Canada and a passport that expires within 6 months or has already expired. canada.ca
  • Anyone traveling within the next 20 business days should not use online renewal, according to IRCC. canada.ca
  • A child passport cannot be renewed in Canada; families apply for a new one each time it expires until the child turns 16. canada.ca

Who reviews the photo

  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says it will refuse a passport application whose photos fall short of its requirements. canada.ca
  • IRCC points out that Canada’s passport photo rules are not the same as those of other countries. canada.ca
