What it costs to make and print your own passport photo

As of November 3, 2026, a passport photo taken at home costs nothing, Walgreens lists regular prints, 4x6 included, from $0.29, and a photo taken in a store costs $15.00 at the Post Office or $16.99 at Walgreens. Doing it yourself is the lowest cost; the work is sizing the photo to 2 x 2 inches with the head at the right height. SelfieToPassport does that for $6.95 and gives you the 4x6 sheet.

The short version

  1. SelfieToPassport: $6.95 to size a phone photo and get a 4x6 sheet with two 2 x 2 inch photos.
  2. Taking the photo at home: free; the State Department accepts a photo taken by a friend or family member.
  3. Printing a 4x6 at Walgreens: regular prints start at $0.29.
  4. A photo taken in a store: $15.00 at the Post Office, $16.99 at Walgreens.
  5. Print on matte or glossy photo paper; photocopies and scans are refused.

Three ways, three prices

At home, the photo is free and the print is a regular 4x6. In a store, the price includes the photo and the prints. Online tools sit in between: you take the photo, the tool sizes it and you print it.

The rules

  • The State Department lists three places to get a passport photo: an acceptance facility, any company that offers photo services, or a friend or family member. travel.state.gov
  • Walgreens lists prints and enlargements from 4x4 to 8x10, 4x6 included, from $0.29. photo.walgreens.com
  • The U.S. Postal Service charges $15.00 for a passport photo taken at a Post Office. usps.com
  • Walgreens charges $16.99 for two printed passport photos, with a digital copy sent by email at no extra charge. photo.walgreens.com

What can go wrong at home

The print has to come out at exactly 2 x 2 inches, on photo paper. A printer or kiosk set to “fit” or “fill” changes the size, and plain paper is refused.

Measure the printed photo with a ruler before you cut it. SelfieToPassport lays out the 4x6 so each photo prints at 2 x 2 inches at 100% scale, and shows the measurements in a free preview.

The rules

  • The U.S. Department of State requires a printed passport photo of 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). travel.state.gov
  • A printed U.S. passport photo must be on matte or glossy photo-quality paper; photocopies and scanned photos are not accepted. travel.state.gov
