What expediting costs and saves

Expedited service shortens processing; it does not shorten mail time unless you pay for faster return delivery too.

The rules

  • Expedited service adds $60 to a renewal by mail and aims at 2 to 3 weeks. travel.state.gov
  • Expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks. travel.state.gov
  • For another $26.87, the State Department ships the finished passport so it arrives 1 to 3 days after it is issued. travel.state.gov

Urgent travel and how to mail it

For travel in under 3 weeks, go to an agency appointment instead of mailing. For a mailed expedited renewal, the DS-82 kit ($4.95) lists the expedite address.

The rules

  • Travel in less than 3 weeks calls for an appointment at a passport agency, booked within 14 calendar days of the trip. travel.state.gov
  • Expedited renewals go to Post Office Box 90955, Philadelphia, PA 19190-0955, with “EXPEDITE” written on the outside of the envelope. travel.state.gov
  • Because an online renewal cannot be expedited, it is only for people with no trip in the next 6 weeks who are in a U.S. state or territory when they apply. travel.state.gov
