Can you renew a U.S. passport online, and what photo do you need?

As of October 26, 2026, you can renew a U.S. passport online at opr.travel.state.gov if it is a 10-year passport that expires within a year or expired less than 5 years ago, you are 25 or older, keep the same name and are not traveling for 6 weeks. The short version

Who can renew online

Every condition has to be true; if one is not, the renewal goes by mail on Form DS-82.

The rules

  • Renewing online is limited to a 10-year passport that expires within the next year or expired less than 5 years ago. travel.state.gov
  • The online route is for applicants 25 or older who keep the same name and other personal details. travel.state.gov
  • Because an online renewal cannot be expedited, it is only for people with no trip in the next 6 weeks who are in a U.S. state or territory when they apply. travel.state.gov
  • Moving from a passport card to a book, or from a book to a card, cannot be done online; those renewals go by mail. travel.state.gov

The digital photo

The photo is uploaded inside the application, which screens it before you submit. A scan or a photo of a printed photo is not allowed. SelfieToPassport sizes an original phone photo to the rules for $6.95.

  • The U.S. online passport renewal takes the photo as a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file, sized from 54 KB up to 10 MB, and a photo from a phone may already be saved in one of those formats. travel.state.gov
  • An online renewal needs an original digital image: rephotographing a paper print or running one through a scanner to create the file is not allowed. travel.state.gov
