The short version
- SelfieToPassport: $6.95 for the digital photo and two print sheets, made from a phone photo at home.
- Post Office photo fee: $15.00, taken at the counter.
- Acceptance fee when the Post Office takes your application: $35.00, separate from the photo.
- You can bring your own photo instead: the State Department accepts one taken by a friend or family member.
- The printed photo has to be 2 x 2 inches.
The two Post Office fees
The photo fee and the acceptance fee are separate. The photo fee applies only if the Post Office takes your photo; the acceptance fee applies when you apply in person at that Post Office.
Neither is the State Department’s application fee, which is paid separately.
Bringing your own photo
You do not have to buy the photo at the counter. A photo taken at home works if it meets the rules, and SelfieToPassport sizes a phone photo to 2 x 2 inches for $6.95 and gives you a 4x6 sheet to print at any photo counter.
The rules
- The State Department lists three places to get a passport photo: an acceptance facility, any company that offers photo services, or a friend or family member. travel.state.gov
- Acceptance facilities and photo vendors each set their own fee for taking a passport photo, according to the State Department. travel.state.gov
- The U.S. Department of State requires a printed passport photo of 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). travel.state.gov
