JAPAN eVISA photo rejected? What to check and how to fix it

As of October 25, 2026, the JAPAN eVISA takes the facial photo as a JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP or HEIC file, with up to 2 MB recommended, against a plain, untextured background with the whole face centered, and the photo has to fit inside the red frame on the upload screen. The eVISA site rules out photos reused from a passport or driver license, and Japan’s missions in the U.S. ask for a photo from the past 6 months with no filters or face-altering apps. When the photo misses the requirements, the embassy or consulate may ask you to apply again. SelfieToPassport turns a phone photo into a 600 x 600 pixel JPEG under 2 MB, with a free preview and $6.95 for the file.

How to fix the photo

SelfieToPassport crops and resizes the photo in your browser and saves it as a JPEG, without filters, retouching or a new background, and shows the result in a free preview before you pay $6.95. The order also includes the 2 x 2 inch photo to print.

  1. Retake the photo with someone else holding the camera, glasses off, against a plain white or off-white wall.
  2. Center the whole face, with the head and the top of the shoulders in the frame.
  3. Resize to 600 x 600 pixels and save as a JPEG under 2 MB.
  4. Upload it in the eVISA form and check that it fits inside the red frame.
