Japan visa photo: size and rules

As of October 25, 2026, a Japan visa photo fits the 45 x 35 mm box on the official form; Japanese missions in the U.S. also take a 2 x 2 inch photo taken within 6 months (per mofa.go.jp, checked on Oct 25, 2026).

The Embassy of Japan wants the visa photo taken in front of a plain background within the past 6 months, and says not to use filters.

The Embassy of Japan accepts only passport-type photos, not prints on regular printer paper, and the photo must be glued to the application, never stapled or taped.

Questions people ask

What size photo do you need for a Japan visa?

Japan’s own application form has a box for a 45 x 35 mm photo, or 2 x 1.4 inches. Japanese missions in the U.S. also take a square 2 x 2 inch print: the Embassy in Washington lists only that size, and the New York consulate accepts a standard U.S. passport-size photo.

For the 35 x 45 mm format, the Denver consulate gives the head height: 32 to 36 mm from the top of the head to the chin. The other offices do not state a head size.

What photo does the JAPAN eVISA need?

An image file in JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP or HEIC, ideally no more than 2 MB, taken within the last six months against a plain, untextured background with the face centered. After upload, the photo has to fit inside the red frame on the screen.

Do not photograph an existing print or reuse the picture from a passport, driver license or group photo. The Embassy of Japan names low-resolution or blurry images among the most common reasons online applications are rejected.

How should a Japan visa photo be printed and attached?

In color, on real photo paper: the Embassy refuses prints on regular printer paper, Houston turns down home-printer prints, Denver refuses thin copy paper and San Francisco asks for glossy paper.

How it goes on the form depends on the office. The Embassy wants glue only, with no staples or tape, while San Francisco’s tourism checklist says taped. Chicago also asks for your name printed on the back.
