The file rules for the Vietnam e-visa portrait
The portrait is the first upload of the form, next to the passport image. The instructions give a 4 x 6 cm size and a 2 MB limit but no pixel count.
A phone photo is usually in a different shape and can be larger than 2 MB, so crop it to the 4 x 6 proportion and save a smaller JPEG.
The rules
- The Vietnam Immigration Department asks e-visa applicants for a portrait photo measuring 4 x 6 cm. evisa.gov.vn
- Vietnam’s e-visa portal takes the portrait as a JPG or JPEG file smaller than 2 MB. evisa.gov.vn
- The first step of a Vietnam e-visa application is uploading two images, a portrait and the biometric passport, after which the system shows the personal details read from the passport. evisa.gov.vn
- Vietnam requires a recent photo for the e-visa, without setting a number of months in its online guide. evisa.gov.vn
Background, glasses and clothing
The portrait is a plain front view: white background, no hat, no glasses, formal clothes.
The rules
- The background of a Vietnam e-visa portrait must be white. evisa.gov.vn
- Vietnam e-visa applicants must look straight at the camera in the portrait and leave off any hat or glasses. evisa.gov.vn
- Formal clothing is what the Vietnam Immigration Department expects in an e-visa portrait. evisa.gov.vn
The automatic check
The form checks both images by itself. When they pass, it fills in the passport fields for you; when the passport image fails, the application cannot be submitted.
The rules
- Vietnam’s e-visa system checks the uploaded portrait and passport images on its own and, when they pass, fills in the passport fields of the form. evisa.gov.vn
- When the passport image fails the automatic check, Vietnam’s e-visa system does not let the application go through. evisa.gov.vn
Before you pay
The fee is paid online and kept if the visa is not granted, so get the photo right first, and apply only on the official addresses.
The rules
- Vietnam collects the e-visa fee online through the portal and keeps it if the visa is not granted. evisa.gov.vn
- The Vietnam Immigration Department lists evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn as the two addresses for applying for an e-visa. evisa.gov.vn
- Vietnamese immigration warns that unofficial e-visa websites can lead to fees that Vietnam’s rules do not authorize. evisa.gov.vn
How to fix the photo
SelfieToPassport crops and resizes the photo in your browser, without retouching the face or replacing the background, and shows the result in a free preview before you pay $6.95.
- Retake the photo if needed: facing the camera, against a plain white wall, no hat, no glasses, formal clothes.
- Crop it to the 4 x 6 proportion with the whole head in the frame.
- Resize to 600 x 900 pixels and save as a JPEG.
- Check that the file is smaller than 2 MB.
- Upload it again in the first step of the e-visa form.
