Dominican passport photo requirements

Dominican passport photo: size and rules

As of October 27, 2026, for a Dominican passport renewal abroad, MIREX lists one recent 5 x 5 cm photo with a white background, and some consular offices take photos on site (per servicios360.mirex.gob.do, checked on Oct 27, 2026).

Some Dominican consular offices have their own photo service, and MIREX tells applicants to check whether theirs does.

The West Coast consulate does not want a printed photo: applicants take it with a phone or camera and email it after mailing their documents.

Questions people ask

Do you need to bring a photo for a Dominican passport in the U.S.?

It depends on the consulate. The general passport guide from the Dominican Foreign Ministry (MIREX) asks for one recent 5 x 5 cm photo on a white background for renewals, and adds that some consular offices have their own photo service.

The New York consulate’s renewal checklist names only the old passport, an updated cédula and a QR-coded birth certificate, and the New Orleans consulate says its procedure includes fingerprints and a photo. Inside the Dominican Republic, the passport office takes the picture at its own office. Ask your consulate before printing anything.

What size is a Dominican passport photo?

MIREX’s consular guide uses 5 x 5 cm for renewals of expired, lost or damaged passports and for a first passport for a child born abroad, and 4 x 5 cm when a new booklet corrects passport data. The West Coast consulate in California lists a passport-style photo of 2×2 without naming the unit.

None of these official pages gives a head size or an eye position. They describe a front-facing close-up with the hair pulled back and both ears showing.

Can you email a photo for a Dominican passport renewal?

At the Dominican consulate for the West Coast, in Glendale, California, yes. Adult and child renewals go by mail, and the photo is not printed: applicants take it with a phone or camera and email it once their documents are sent. The consulate can also take it remotely for US$15.

No pixel size or file-size limit is published. The consulate’s instructions turn down a gray or blue background, an open mouth, earrings, hidden ears, glasses or a cropped top of the head.

What should you avoid wearing in a Dominican passport photo?

Glasses and jewelry. The West Coast consulate rules out glasses, earrings, chains and necklaces; MIREX’s guide adds piercings and smiling; and the passport office in the Dominican Republic bans contact lenses too.

Hair goes back off the face with the ears and forehead uncovered, and head coverings are accepted only for religious or medical reasons. Dark clothing that covers the shoulders stands out against the white background.
