India e-Visa photo: size and rules

As of October 25, 2026, an India e-Visa photo is a square JPEG from 10 KB to 1 MB showing the full face from the front, eyes open and no glasses, on a plain light or white background (per indianvisaonline.gov.in, checked on Oct 25, 2026).

India’s e-Visa instructions ask applicants to center the head in the frame and to show the full head, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin.

An India e-Visa application can be rejected when the uploaded photograph or documents are not clear or do not follow the specification.

Questions people ask

What are the photo file requirements for an India e-Visa?

A JPEG of at least 10 KB and at most 1 MB, with equal height and width, so the image is square. The e-Visa instructions also ask for no border around the photo.

The e-Visa page gives no pixel dimensions, only that file size window and the square shape, so the number to check before uploading is the file size.

How should the head be framed in an India e-Visa photo?

Centered, with the whole head inside the picture, from the top of the hair down to the bottom of the chin. The face looks straight at the camera with the eyes open.

The e-Visa instructions stop there: unlike the regular visa page on the same portal, they do not state a head height in inches or millimeters.

What happens if the India e-Visa photo is not right?

An application can be rejected when the photo or the documents are not clear or not as specified. Each submitted application is scrutinized, and if an image is not appropriate the applicant may get an email asking for a new upload, normally within 24 hours.

The new file goes in through the re-upload tab at the bottom of the e-Visa page, so keep the email address on the application within reach.
