Mexican passport photo: size and rules

As of October 25, 2026, Mexico’s consulates in the U.S. take the passport photo at the appointment, in color on a white background with no glasses; passports last 1 to 10 years (per gob.mx, checked on Oct 25, 2026).

Under Mexico’s passport regulation, the passport photo is taken from the front, in color, against a white background.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry takes the passport photo without glasses, with the head fully uncovered and nothing covering the face.

Questions people ask

Do you need to bring a photo for a Mexican passport at a U.S. consulate?

No print appears on the official checklists. Mexico’s passport regulation makes being photographed with the Foreign Ministry’s own devices a requirement, and the consulate takes the picture during the appointment, along with fingerprints, an iris scan and your signature.

Staff then print the OP-5 application with that data for you to review and sign. At consulates in the United States the passport can be handed over the same visit, valid for 1, 3, 6 or 10 years.

What should you wear for the photo at a Mexican consulate?

Expect a front-facing color picture against white. Glasses come off, the head stays fully uncovered, and nothing may hide any part of the face; the regulation names glasses explicitly.

Since the consulate controls the camera and the backdrop, there is nothing to print or resize at home. What you control is how you arrive: no hat or head covering, and glasses ready to take off.

How is a child’s photo taken for a Mexican passport?

At the consulate, like an adult’s. Parents or guardians authorize the photo, and the child is photographed from the front, in color, on white, without glasses or anything on the head.

Consent is given on form OP-7/I or OP-7/II, filled out at the consulate, or with a Mexican notarial instrument or court ruling.
