NZeTA photo: size and rules

As of November 3, 2026, an NZeTA request needs one face photo under six months old: a JPG or JPEG below 10 MB on a plain, light background, uploaded or taken in the online form (per immigration.govt.nz, checked on Nov 3, 2026).

An NZeTA photo has to be less than six months old.

Immigration New Zealand forbids manipulating or digitally altering an NZeTA photo, whether with AI or with any other editing tool.

Questions people ask

What photo does an NZeTA request need?

One picture of your own face, supplied inside the request form: either a file you upload or a shot taken there and then with your phone or computer camera. The file must be a JPG or JPEG under 10 MB, and the photo itself less than six months old.

Immigration New Zealand publishes no pixel size or head measurement for it. The form checks the picture as you go and, if it rejects one, says what to fix.

Why would Immigration New Zealand decline an NZeTA photo?

Because it is not a live picture of you (a photo of your passport page, of a print or of a screen), because it was edited with AI or other software, or because the face is hard to read: too dark, too bright, uneven light, sunglasses or hair over the eyes.

A weak photo can delay the request or get it declined. If the system cannot find your face at all because of uncommon facial characteristics, you can ask for a manual review after submitting, but the photo still has to meet the standards.

Common reasons a photo is turned down

  1. A picture of a passport, of a printed photo or of a screen falls short of the technical standards for an NZeTA photo. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz
  2. An NZeTA request can be held up or declined when its photo misses the Immigration New Zealand standards. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz
  3. An NZeTA photo that comes out too bright or too dark is not acceptable. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

Glasses, head coverings and clothing

  • Nothing may hide the eyes or face in an NZeTA photo, which rules out sunglasses and loose hair across the face. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz
  • The NZeTA photo shows the traveller with open eyes and a neutral expression, looking straight into the lens. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

Digital file

  • The NZeTA request form takes the photo only as a .JPG or .JPEG file, and the file has to be smaller than 10 MB. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

Where photos come from

  • Immigration New Zealand lists one acceptable photo, or a device able to take it, among the things a traveller needs to request an NZeTA. immigration.govt.nz
  • The NZeTA form gives two ways to supply the face photo: upload a recent one, or let the device camera take it, and the form then checks the picture. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz
  • Immigration New Zealand says a picture from a professional photographer has a better chance of passing the NZeTA check, and suggests reusing an existing passport photo. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

Who reviews the photo

  • The NZeTA photo is how Immigration New Zealand confirms who the traveller is, and without it the request cannot be completed or sent. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz
  • A traveller whose uncommon facial features stop the NZeTA system from finding the face can ask for a person to review the photo once the request is submitted. nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

FAQ

Can I use my passport photo for an NZeTA?

Immigration New Zealand suggests an existing passport photo if you have one, as long as it is under six months old. A photo of the passport page itself does not meet its technical standards. What if the NZeTA form cannot find my face?

When uncommon facial characteristics stop the system from detecting a face, you can ask for the photo to be reviewed by hand after you submit the NZeTA request. It still has to follow the photo standards. Source: official page "NZeTA application - request an NZeTA (traveller photo page)", checked on Nov 3, 2026.

Is SelfieToPassport the Immigration New Zealand?

No. SelfieToPassport is not affiliated with the Immigration New Zealand or any other government agency. The Immigration New Zealand publishes the photo rules for free at immigration.govt.nz; this page links to each one.

Does SelfieToPassport replace the background of an NZeTA photo?

We crop and resize your original photo and never replace or repaint the background. If the wall does not pass the check, the tool asks for a new photo and tells you how to fix the light or the wall.
