Irish passport photo requirements

Irish passport photo: size and rules

As of November 3, 2026, Ireland’s Passport Online takes a colour JPEG of at least 715 x 951 pixels and up to 9 MB, taken in the last six months by someone else, never a selfie (per ireland.ie, checked on Nov 3, 2026).

Renewing an adult Irish passport through Passport Online calls for a digital photo that meets the Department of Foreign Affairs photo guidelines.

An Irish passport photo may not be digitally enhanced or changed in any way.

Questions people ask

What digital photo does Ireland’s Passport Online accept?

A colour JPEG, at least 715 pixels wide by 951 high and no bigger than 9 MB. It must be the original capture: not a scan of a print, not enhanced, without compression artefacts or lens distortion.

The same file serves a Passport Book or a Passport Card, and adult renewals list it alongside a card, an email address and the old passport. Staff check it after the system accepts the upload.

Who can take the photo for an online Irish passport application?

Anyone but you: the Passport Service rules out selfies and asks that someone helps, without the camera zoom. A photo shop can email the file, or a participating booth can give a code that loads it into the form.

Children who cannot support themselves lie on a plain white surface for the picture, and any soother comes out first.
